Blog #1: Reaction to Hardscrabble Childhood.

After watching the film I felt a great appreciation for everything i have. I've taken for granted the luxuries I have in life. It's sad to think of the lives these children have because they did nothing to deserve it. Looking at the situation from an outsider's point of view i thought that these children would want to better their lives and make more of themselves; but after watching the film i realized how difficult it is for them. It would be extremely difficult for these families to improve their situations considering the lack of help from the community as well as the government.

I was really inspired by the twelve year old boy who hoped to go to college and become a carpenter. He was very smart for such a young boy. I was glad that he had set goals for his life and seemed set on achieving them. i hope that he is able to do so. It was sad to hear him say that he knows he is becoming like his father even though he doesn't want to be. I believe that with enough hard work and determination he will be able to set a great example for his younger brothers.

This film helps to expose this issue on a local level. I always knew that this issue existed in our society but after seeing how present it is in our very own state, I feel that steps should be taken in order to fix it. I think it will take a joint effort from the government, the community and the families. I believe programs dedicated to helping the parents of these children learn job skills that will help them get better paying jobs would be a good way to start. This way they will be able to afford the basic necessities for their children. I believe the schools should have after school programs in which the children can have extra help if they need it. Extra curricular activities and sports are a great way for these children to make friends and become involved in positive activities instead of turning to violence and crime. It is the job of the government to make sure that these schools receive proper funding in order to help the situation. I feel that there will be no immediate end to this problem in the near future, but a long term goal to alleviate the issue is possible.

I'm glad you said that no immediate solutions are possible because the problems you mentioned seem so deeply rooted that it's hardly likely that any of the problems presented can be solved very easily. I do know, however, that the responsibility lies with some one or some agency...not sure which!
